It's a well known fact that the original filters deteriorate badly and cannot be reused.  A couple of alternatives have been tried with varying concerns, damaging particles being the most prevalent.  We have personally tested our filters, saturated in Mobil-1 synthetic oil @ 300F, with no detectable change visual or physical characteristics.  Significant improvement over the original foam filter.
